SPIE’s Photonics West, held in San Francisco’s Moscone Center, is the country’s largest photonics tradeshow of the year. The show begins on Tuesday, January 31st, and runs through Thursday, February 2nd. Precision Optical will be exhibiting at our 20’ x 10’ booth, booth #1041 in the south hall, showcasing our optical component products and meeting with industry members to discuss their custom optical system and component requirements.
In 2016, Precision Optical produced multiple optical flats greater than 600mm in diameter. Our nearly-60 years of engineering and manufacturing experience, coupled with our fabrication and state-of-the-art metrology equipment, has allowed us to successfully delivery optical flats of this size.
Precision Optical is excited about exhibiting in San Diego at next week’s SPIE Optics + Phontonics 2016, where the latest research in optical engineering and applications, nanotechnology, sustainable energy, and organic photonics will be presented. Precision Optical will be exhibiting at our 10’ x 10’ booth, Booth 536, from Tuesday, 8/30/16, through Thursday, 9/1/16 at the San Diego Convention Center.

It is with a heavy heart that Precision Optical acknowledges the passing of our dear friend and employee Richard Reid. Rick was a genuine, humble, and great person. His favorite hobbies were repairing/riding motorcycles and working in the field of optical manufacturing. His work ethic, courtesy to peers, and loyalty were unparalleled. We are deeply saddened by his passing. He was more than an employee. He was family.
One of Precision Optical’s core products for the past 55 years has been the corner cube retroreflector. Precision Optical is extremely honored to host Irvine Valley College’s Photonics Technology Program for the second year in a row. As part of IVC’s course LET225, Quality Assurance of Precision Optics, Precision Optical is hosting three classes (lecture + lab) at our facility.
OptiFab is the largest conference and exhibition dedicated to the manufacturing of precision optics. Organized by SPIE and the American Precision Optics Manufacturers Association (APOMA), OptiFab hosts exhibitors displaying both classical and advanced manufacturing and metrology technologies. It also facilitates a host of workshops and presentations. OptiFab is an ideal setting in which to showcase Precision Optical’s products and services.
A common element used in optical systems is known as a beam splitter. Beam splitting optical assemblies and elements play an integral role in optical systems by splitting, combining, and controlling the directions of multiple beam paths. Specialized thin film coatings applied to optical surfaces divide beams of light into separate wavelengths and polarization states with specific targeted values of transmittance and reflectance.

Precision Optical utilizes its arsenal of metrology equipment on all products delivered, where 100% inspection of finished articles is often required. In addition to using metrology equipment for fully furnished optical components, coatings and assemblies, we also offer metrology services on customer furnished materials.
On January 16, 2015, Precision Optical was privileged to host Hildreth “Hal” Walker Jr., an early pioneer in the field of laser telemetry. He was one of the key historical figures responsible for the design and operations of the laser-ranging project that took place as part of Apollo 11’s “first man on the moon” mission.
Building upon decades of optical assembly experience, Precision Optical is pursuing an expansion of the assembly services we provide to our customers. Precision Optical possesses a diverse set of assembly capabilities that includes custom prisms, mirrors, windows and lenses, in sizes ranging from 3mm miniature optics to large 500mm optical flats.

Nick’s promotion to President is a natural progression for his work at Precision Optical, a family-owned company. His expertise in the technical side of the company is unparalleled, and his background in physics, coupled with his good nature, makes him the ideal person to take the helm.
In recent years we have seen a growing demand for coat-only services, and Precision Optical is fully able to fulfill the diverse requirements. While significantly expanding the types of optical coatings we offer on substrates manufactured in-house, we also have grown in our ability to precisely schedule and maximize coating runs for efficiency gains.
Precision Optical manufactures thousands of porro prisms every year. Porro prisms can be made in all sorts of shapes and sizes. A common type that Precision Optical offers is a sharp roof or “knife” edge porro prism.
Precision Optical has added two new interferometers, a new 4D 6” AccuFiz Fizeau© for its Polishing Department, and a Zygo Verifire ATZ© with a DMI radius slide to its Quality Assurance Department.
Precision Optical has partnered with Irvine Valley College’s Photonics Technology Program and Dr. Brian Monacelli in hosting classes at Precision Optical’s facility in Costa Mesa California.
On the week of August 18th, 2014, Precision Optical attended and displayed at the annual SPIE© Optics + Photonics© meeting, held at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego California.

On October 8th, 2014 Precision Optical was proud to host an extraordinary meeting of the OSSC. The meeting was held at Precision Optical’s facility, with the support of OSA, and SPIE. The focus of the event was to further the cause of the National Photonics Initiative (“NPI”).
Precision Optical has acquired its first 3D printer, and with it has added new rapid prototyping, tooling, manufacturing, and engineering capabilities.
