Education & Outreach

Precision Optical offers an education program committed to supporting the optical community by promoting educational advancement of future optical engineers and technicians.

We offer practical optics education for students at many levels, particularly high school and college. Many students in Mathematics and Physics can get discouraged from not having a “real life” application of their difficult studies. The Ensign-Lambert Optics Education Program (ELOEP) provides field trips to inspire a next generation of problem solvers in applied Physics and Mathematics.

Academic and Community Involvement

We promote high school level students to local schools that offer Optics education, such as University of California Irvine, Irvine Valley College , and
The University of Arizona. This helps establish a high school pipeline that is fundamental for colleges

We also offer various types of internships in coordination with our academic and community partners. Through schools, government, professional societies, and non-profit organizations such as VitalLink OC, The City of Santa Ana, Saddleback College and Bridge |2| Engineering, the Optical Society of Southern California (OSSC), Optical Institute of Southern California (OISC), and Irvine Valley College (IVC), we have a continuous flow of interns that we hope will enter the optics ecosystem. Internship, whether paid, un-paid, or for school credit, have been mutually beneficial for both the intern and for Precision Optical.

“My internship at Precision Optical has opened my eyes to the field of optical engineering, which may play a crucial role in my future career path. I am looking forward to getting to know all the departments in the company and further broadening my knowledge of optics.”

– Dror Sapir, 2014-2015 Intern

Practical application of collegiate level studying in a manufacturing environment is extremely beneficial to both student and employer, and in-turn, to the college. We encourage our own employees to take part in local courses. We also are actively partnering with local universities to offer lectures and laboratory courses for students at our facility.

Outreach Philosophy

Optics and Photonics education outreach can easily start before high school with getting young people interested and aware of the field, and outside of the academic realm. Optics and Photonics is present everywhere in our everyday lives, and most people (kids especially) are not aware of how significant the science of light it is to everyday life. We offer inspirational/educational field trips for students from middle school to graduate level, as well as industry professionals and dignitaries. We host professional events at our facility such as advisory board meetings, panel discussions, and topical events such as the National Photonics Initiative . Precision Optical is a leader in the Southern California optics community, with heavy involvement with OSA, SPIE, and the OSSC, and is a founding member of SCOPE, the Southern California Optics & Photonics Enterprise (cluster).

In creating a re-generative ecosystem of Optics and Photonics technicians, Precision Optical is committed to supporting the Optics and Photonics community. As the future holds a very high demand for Optics and Photonics, it also holds a very high demand for optical technicians and engineers.
